Definitions
Like any organization, Scouting has a language all it’s own. This cheat-sheet should help new parents and scouts with the basic terms. If you hear anything that you don’t understand, just ask a leader or a parent who has been around awhile.
Cub Scouts – The scouting organization for boys/girls in K– 5th grades. Led by adult volunteers.
Scouts BSA – The scouting organization for boys/girls in 6th – 12th grades. Led by the youth.
Lion Cub Scout – A Kindergarten Cub Scout.
Tiger Cub Scout – A 1st grade Cub Scout.
Wolf Cub Scout – A 2nd grade Cub Scout.
Bear Cub Scout – A 3rd grade Cub Scout.
Webelos 1 – A 4th grade Cub Scout
Webelos 2 / Arrow of Light – A 5th grade Cub Scout.
Webelos is meant to provide a transition period from Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA. Webelos continue to do all Pack activities, but also get involved with some Scouts BSA Troop activities.
Rank – The primary award that the youth work on each year (Tiger Cubs work on their Tiger Badge and Bobcat Badge, Wolf Cubs work on their Wolf Badge, Bear Cubs work on their Bear badge, Webelos 1 Cubs work on their Webelos Badge, Arrow of Light/Webelos 2 Cubs work on the Arrow of Light – the highest award in Cub Scouting).
Den – A group of 5-10 cub scouts who are all the same age. Den’s typically meet weekly and also go on field trips.
Pack – A group of Den’s that consist of all age groups. Pack 160 meets monthly, goes camping together, and has a variety of other Pack events.
Council – We are part of the Daniel Webster Council, which consists of the entire state of NH. The council provides camps and a professional staff to assist Pack and Den volunteers.
District – We are part of the Arrowhead district which consists of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, Wilton, Pelham, Windham, and Salem. The district has several activities including the Chuckwagon Derby and Webelos Alley.
Pack Meeting – The pack meeting includes of all of the dens. Parents and siblings come along. We hand out awards earned that month, play games, have a great time. The Pack meetings usually takes place on the third Tuesday of the month. Our pack meets at the Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church. Please refer to the Pack calendar for exact dates and times. Jamboree – A large gathering of scouts. There are State, National and World-Wide Jamborees.
Scouting for Food – An event we take part in every year to collect food for local food banks. We distribute bags to every home in Salem with the help from other cub scout, boy scout and girl scout troops. A week later we collect the bags full of food.
Blue & Gold Banquet – A celebration of Cub Scouting’s birthday in February (blue and gold are the Cub Scout colors). We have a dinner banquet, entertainment, and present the scouts awards earned. Pack 160 often delays the banquet to April (instead of hosting in February).
Pinewood Derby – A Cub Scout classic where each scout builds a model race car from wood and we race them down a 32’ track. The car kits and rules will be distributed a month before the derby in March. Winners go on to the District pinewood derby.
Chuckwagon Derby – This carnival type event allows us to compete against other packs in Southern NH in basic scout skills.
